Viu launches SVOD service in Singapore with Singtel as a partner

OTT video service, Viu, has launched a discounted premium subscription service in Singapore with telco partner, Singtel, offering viewers unlimited content downloads.

An ad-supported Viu app has been downloaded more than 500,000 times since Viu’s launch January launch in Singapore, with a premium version available for a monthly fee of SGD 6.98. Singtel subs who opt for the premium version will get a bundled package deal at only SGD 4.98 along with other exclusive promotional offers, such as additional 1GB data at SGD 3.

The PCCW Media-owned service also gets to bill users through Singtel’s established billing system, eliminating the hassle of collections. That’s a strategy Netflix also has taken with Singtel.

“With the rise of digital content, we are seeing a rapid shift in the way media content is being consumed, especially by Millennials,” said Janice Lee, Managing Director of PCCW Media. “By sharing the same vision to bring the most compelling content to viewers anytime, anywhere on any mobile device, Viu and Singtel are strategically aligned to focus on adapting to meet the needs of today’s viewers.”

Singapore has an immense upside in terms of OTT services as some 86% of its connected consumers regularly stream or download video content.

“We are spearheading change in the way consumers engage with and consume digital content,” said Lee.

Viu premium subscribers have access to a library of content that includes current Korean hit dramas like Uncontrollably Fond, and get the option of English subtitle right after Korean telecast. The fast turnaround with subtitles also is available on Viu at the same time frame in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Viu, which rolled out as an ad-supported service in several APAC markets starting in Hong Kong last October, includes Korean dramas and variety shows from the Big 4 Korean broadcasters, as well as Japanese dramas.

Viu AVOD users have access to Viu’s catalogue of Asian content for free. All users have access to multi-screen access, download-to-stream capability and multi-device synchronization when streaming, providing users with a truly seamless viewing experience on-the-go.

Viu also has established strategic telco partnerships with networks such as CSL in Hong Kong, Telekom Malaysia Berhad, Maxis, Digi and U Mobile in Malaysia as well as Telkom Indonesia in Indonesia.

Stay tuned.
