Subs up, revenues flat for global pay-tv players through 2021

Nearly one-in-three (29%) of the world’s top operators are expected to see revenues from subscriptions and pay-per-view remain flat between 2015 and 2021, according to a new report.

Digital TV Research reports that revenues for the 400 operators – that currently account for 83% of global totals — will be flat at $206 billion and lose share to about 80%.

The top 100 operators accounted for three-quarters of the world’s pay TV subscribers by end-2015, with this proportion not expected to change over the next five years. The top 10 operators took 42% by end-2015, according to the Global Pay TV Operator Forecasts report.

The number of operators with 10 million subscriber or more is expected to climb to 18 by 2021, from 10 today. The number of operators with more than 5 million subscribers will stay at 29.

Among those operators, subscriber numbers will reach 912 million by 2021, from 778 million in 2015. Overall, global subs are expected to top 1.07 billion subs, up from 928 million.

Mammoth cableco China Radio & TV is expected to see subscriptions reach more than a quarter billion from 239,000 today.

IPTV player China Telecom will be the second-largest operator in the world at 39.2 million subs, up from 22.9 million, followed by China’s BesTV (IPTV) at 23.5 million, Comcast at 21.9 million, down from 22.3 million, and DirecTV at 19.6 million, down from 19.7 million.

About 93 providers are expected to lose subs.
