Report: HBO OTT service aims at April launch using MLB technology

HBO plans to launch its OTT service in April using MLB’s digital services, according to published reports.

The decision to outsource the delivery apparently has resulted in HBO’s CTO Otto Berkes resigning from the company.

Fortune reports that HBO’s efforts to build a DIY streaming service were abandoned in favor of MLB, which has outsourced its technology before. It was used during the FIFA World Cup and is currently used for WWE’s OTT play. HBO, however, would likely be its largest client.

Fortune said Berkes had 55 engineers working on the project in Seattle, and said sources report the operation costs HBO more than $100 million a year, a major source of friction in the company.

HBO announced its intent to launch an OTT service earlier this year.
