North, Central and South Americas recorded their first pay-TV subscriber loss even, according to the quarterly informitv Multiscreen Index, a modest 290,000 customers, but a loss nonetheless.
Other regions saw similarly modest growth, with APAC (3.46 million) being led by 10 services that combines for 2.76 million new subscribers, including 2 million by six operators in India. EMEA added 830,000 across an array of service providers. Those adds more than offsetting the loss in the Americas, generating about 4 million adds in the global ecosystem.
“The Multiscreen Index shows that over 12 months the top 10 services in the Asia Pacific region claimed gains of 13.76 million television subscribers, which is an 18% increase,” said informitv analyst Dr. Sue Farrell.
Satellite (2.27 million), saw the most adds, followed by cable (1.39 million) and telcos (330,000).
The survey tracks the top 100 operators globally. Twenty-five of them reported quarterly losses.
