More big-name players are entering the subscription video on-demand brouhaha in the United States. This time, it’s AMC partnering with BBC Worldwide and broadcaster ITV – the two largest broadcasters in the United Kingdom – in a push into an already crowded market sometime in Q1 2017 with a service dubbed BritBox.
Minority partner AMC already has a $65 million investment in SVOD service Acorn TV, which already streams content from the BBC and ITV to an estimated 350,000 subscribers. AMC also owns Shudder, a niche SVOD service and holds just less than 50% of pay-TV channel BBC America.
The partners have big plans for the new entity, saying they’ll make an international push after launching in the U.S.
“ITV is now a global production and distribution business and this marks the first step in our international ambitions for BritBox,” said Simon Pitts, ITV managing director of online, pay TV and interactive. “We’re delighted to be bringing the creative might of the BBC and ITV together for the first time in this exciting new streaming service for U.S. fans.”
The service will be available on iOS and Android mobile devices, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku and on web browsers.
So far, no details on pricing or an exact launch date.
